My friends and I happened to visit the ‘Big Apple’ - New York for the first time. It is much more attractive than what it is projected as in movies and television soaps. New York is easily located at the confluence of the Hudson River, Long Island and the Atlantic Ocean, which, reflects the city’s importance as a port and is the disembarkation point for millions of immigrants here. This international city is made up of five regions – Staten Island, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. However, Manhattan remains the epicenter of New York as it takes pride in being home to -- 24-hour pasta restaurants of Little Italy, the bustling sidewalks of Chinatown, the jazz clubs of Greenwich Village, Broadway; and of course the iconic sights of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and Times Square. Sculpted by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and modeled on the Colossus of Rhodes, Statue of Liberty was donated by the people of France in 1886 to commemorate the alliance among the two countries during the American Revolution. However, In view of security concerns in the wake of September 11, the inside the statue is no longer accessible but, you may walk upto the secured base. You may get there by taking the Circle Line ferry that departs every half an hour from Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan and leaves for both Liberty and Ellis Islands. This is a well-known landmark in New York City. Times Square is best known for the good entertainment and the best New Year's Eve which attracts million of people. During the 1960s Time Square of New York City, lost its charm when illegal activities started raising their ugly heads. A major 'clean-up' operation removed most of the sleaze and now the combination of color, zipping message boards and massive TV screens make for quite a sight. Enthusiastic locals and travelers gather to view a brightly lit ball descend from the roof of Times Square at midnight, an event that lasts just 90 seconds and leaves most of the revelers bewitched!
